Quality Assurance Beyond Aerospace: QMS and Welding Quality for Marine, Construction, and Transportation

Aerospace quality management gets the spotlight because of AS9100 and NADCAP, but the underlying discipline — documented processes, gap assessments, internal audits, corrective action — is just as critical for marine, construction, and transportation organizations. The standards are different; the value isn't.

Marine and shipbuilding. Marine construction and repair work is typically built on ISO 9001 as the foundational quality management standard, often paired with ISO 3834 for welding-specific quality requirements. ISO 3834 exists because weld quality is built into the process, not just inspected after the fact — certification demonstrates that a yard's welding procedures, personnel qualification, and documentation meet a recognized international standard, independent of general ISO 9001 certification.

Construction and industrial fabrication. Structural steel fabricators and construction contractors typically operate under AWS D1.1 for weld quality, layered on top of an ISO 9001 (or equivalent) quality management system. The same gap-assessment and internal-audit discipline used to prepare an aerospace supplier for a customer audit applies directly here — identifying where documented procedures don't match shop-floor practice before a client or code official does.

Transportation. Transportation manufacturers and fabricators — anything from structural components to pressure-retaining assemblies — face the same fundamental need: a quality system that can demonstrate, with objective evidence, that what left the shop matches what the drawing and code required.

Lion NDT's Quality Assurance services apply this same methodology — gap assessments, QMS/SMS development, internal audits, corrective action planning — whether the governing framework is AS9100 for an aerospace client or ISO 9001/ISO 3834 for a marine, construction, or transportation organization.
