AWS D17.2:2026 Rewrites the Rulebook for Aerospace Resistance Welding — What Changed in the Fourth Edition

AWS D17.2/D17.2M — the Specification for Resistance Welding for Aerospace Applications — reached its fourth edition in June 2026, and the change is bigger than a typical revision cycle. The specification expanded from five clauses to twelve, reorganizing requirements that used to be bundled together into their own distinct sections.

What actually got restructured. The former Clauses 4 and 5 — which previously bundled design, personnel, equipment, and quality requirements together — were split apart to separate design, personnel qualification, equipment and machine qualification, welding schedule certification, production welding, inspection and acceptance, mechanical testing, and quality assurance into their own dedicated clauses. Figures and tables were renumbered and moved into the clauses they actually belong to, rather than living in a separate reference section.

The new requirement worth flagging: wire mesh. Responding to industry demand, the fourth edition adds resistance welding requirements for wire mesh — prefabricated metallic mesh, fabric, or cloth welded to another mesh or to a solid substrate. If your shop performs this kind of joining and has been working from an older edition or an internal procedure with no code backing, that gap is now closed — and it also raises a compliance question about whether existing procedures meet the new clause.

Clause 12 and what it means for your QA program. The new Clause 12 defines the quality assurance framework for aerospace resistance welding from machine setup through finished production hardware, including rework and repair. Production weld quality is controlled through witness test coupons welded at key intervals during production, now backed by a standardized examination data table that defines discontinuity acceptance limits — replacing what used to be a looser, less-specified acceptance process under the old five-clause structure.
