ISO 9001's Sixth Edition Publishes September 16 — What AS9100 and NADCAP Shops Should Know Before It Lands

ISO has confirmed September 16, 2026 as the publication date for the sixth edition of ISO 9001 — the base quality management standard that AS9100 itself is built on top of. It's the standard's first substantive revision since 2015, and while this isn't an aerospace-specific change yet, for any AS9100-certified shop it's the ground the aerospace standard is about to be rewritten on.

Where the revision actually stands. The Draft International Standard (DIS) cleared its ballot with 97% approval in December 2025, advancing the revision to the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) stage. That FDIS ballot closed July 9, 2026, and ISO has now confirmed publication for September 16, 2026 — with a roughly three-year transition period for certified organizations running to approximately September 2029.

What actually changed. Two clauses carry most of the substance. Clause 4.1/4.2 (context of the organization) now requires organizations to explicitly assess and document whether climate change is a relevant issue for their quality management system — a formal evaluation is required even if the conclusion is that it isn't. Clause 5.1.1 (leadership) now requires top management to actively promote a quality culture and ethical behavior, not simply sign off on a QMS that exists on paper.

Why AS9100 shops shouldn't wait for the aerospace-specific version. AS9100 is built directly on top of ISO 9001's clause structure, and the aerospace standard's own revision (expected to rebrand as IA9100) is expected to follow this base revision rather than run in parallel. Shops that wait for the AS9100-specific rewrite to start documenting a climate-change relevance assessment or a quality-culture program will be starting that work later than shops that treat the ISO 9001 base revision as the real starting gun.
